Starting the Year Off Right

Today’s blog post was written by guest author, and CPLS Senior, Ellia Morse.

As part of the process of raising up godly leaders, Cair Paravel emphasizes a student’s senior year as an opportunity for strong leadership development. Students prepare to take what they learned outside of the halls of Cair Paravel to college and beyond, so they practice by modeling Christ to the rest of the school. Seniors are tasked with leading the student body with a set of guiding principles incorporated into a class charter and a yearly theme.

Each year at Cair Paravel, the upcoming senior class meets and decides on what they want their senior theme and class creed to be. This sets the tone for the rest of the year by determining what sort of change they would like to make in the high school and what they want to be remembered as a class for. During convocation, speakers address this theme with careful reflection, personal anecdotes and fun activities, all while staying grounded in Scripture. The creation of the charter and theme takes place at junior retreat in May, in which the upcoming senior class bonds through a series of team-building games and discusses their vision for their final year at Cair Paravel.

Previous themes have included Steadfast, Authenticity, The Call, and Start with the Heart.

The theme created by the Class of 2020 is Beyond the Surface: Discerning God’s will for our relationships with Him, others, and ourselves.

Here is the Class Charter written by the Class of 2020:

We, the class of 2020, strive to grow to be more like Christ by doing justice, loving kindness, and walking humbly with God, according to Micah 6:8. We strive for justice by treating everyone with the respect and love they are due as the image-bearers of God. We strive for kindness by creating an inclusive school community that is patient and aware of the strengths and weaknesses of others. We strive to walk humbly with God and lead others as we follow Him.

In all these things we strive to be united. We will pursue our goals fervently and joyfully in order that we might glorify God. Our ultimate goal is to grow to be more like Christ, and as leaders we desire to encourage this growth in the rest of our school community as well. We aim to love as Christ loved, and by doing so develop a pure heart, good conscience, and sincere faith (1 Timothy 1:5). We ask that the student body hold us accountable to these things. Despite the challenges we know will arise this year, we promise to pursue these goals devoutly and do our best to make a positive impact at CPLS during our time as seniors.

We know that the Class of 2020 will do a great job at going “Beyond the Surface” and leading others to do the same.
